Youth Entrepreneurs Seminar – Polokwane

My start Up and Capricon FM are hosting a seminar for youth entrepreneurs in Polokwane. Introducing young adults to entrepreneurship is an important activity, to help young adults make decisions about their futures.
My Start Up  is an important initiative, and has a mission we support. It’s mission is:

MyStartUp is a movement that seeks to galvanize South Africans to become a nation of entrepreneurs.

The recently launched website is showing great potential.

Calling Women Entrepreneurs – 10 000 Women Certificate Programme

The Gordon Institute of Business Studies (GIBS) is managing the 10 000 Women Programme in South Africa. The course provides a scholarship to women entrepreneurs, but requires a refundable fee of R 3000-00, payable on completion of the course. GIBS describes the programme as “world-class education to women entrepreneurs”  . Full details available on the GIBS website.

Venture Capital for Africa (VC4A) June Applications

Venture Capital For Africa is an innovative online platform, which describes itself thus:

Municipal Data Hackathon – Johannesburg

Municipal data hackathon focused on Johannesburg. Complaining about Johannesburg service delivery is a suburban trait. The Hack Hackers chapter of Johannesburg is doing something more than just whining – they looking at the available data and through that working out ways to make Johannesburg work. Please register for the event. 

Municipal data matters: from finances to service delivery, the numbers ‬provide infinite story potential. ‪Join us as we hack municipal data on service delivery and then use it to create minimum viable products by the end of the day‬

The Founder Institute Calling South African Entrepreneurs

The Founder Institute  is currently calling for applications from South African entrepreneurs for it’s accelerator program. It currently is exploring opportunities in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Founder Institute is a start up accelerator attempting to globalise Silicon Valley. According to the Founder Institute they have launched 750 startups in four years, making them the world’s largest idea stage incubator.
The opportunity that is presented to applicants includes:

  • Training programme; 
  • Mentoring; and
  • Possibility to access funding.

There is a small registration fee to submit an application of $ 50-00 (Around R 500-00) and additional fee of $ 700-00 (Around R 7000-00) to enroll in the course. The details of the funding arrangements and teaching are interesting, and require entrepreneurs to apply their minds across the full programme.

South African Innovation Summit -Inventor's Garage Competition

The South African Innovation Summit has an interesting competition for inventors. Aptly titled “Inventor’s Garage Competition” it provides an opportunity for inventors of every type to enter the competition, as described by the organisers as follows:

This competition is open to everyone across all industries in South Africa and all SADC member countries! You can enter as an individual, a company, team or group. The theme is ‘Innovation goes VIRAL, catch it for GROWTH!’.
Here are some examples:
An industrial designer or architect can enter a model of a bridge or building; a graphic designer can enter an animation; a scientist can enter his/her discovery or invention (as long as it can be displayed physically for the exhibition); an entrepreneur can enter a prototype of his invention; a costume designer can enter a piece of clothing; an IT developer can enter his/her application etc.

The competition provides cash prizes for three winning entries as follows:

  • First prize        R 25 000-00
  • Second prize    R 10 000-00
  • Third prize      R 5 000-00

The competition has a social element to it, allowing anyone to vote for an entry on the conferences Facebook page.
Details on entering the competition, rules, criteria for judging  and entry forms are available on the competition website. The closing date for entries is the 22 August 2013.
